Swiftwater Rescue Technician Level 1 Instructor
The Rescue 3 Swiftwater Rescue Technician Level 1 instructor is the first level of Instructor qualification with Rescue 3 International. This qualification allows you to teach the following Rescue 3 International courses:
- Awareness Level
- Basic Water First Responder
- Swiftwater First Responder
- Operations Swiftwater Rescue First Responder
- Swiftwater Rescue Technician Unit 1
- Whitewater Rescue Technician
Additionally SRT Instructor courses delivered by Rescue 3 (UK) at The National Whitewater Centre are approved by the University of Central Lancashire.
A number of UK fire brigades have used this accreditation as a bench mark of competence and expertise amongst key personnel. These key personnel have in turn used the acquired knowledge to develop and deliver in-house training packages specific to the needs of that brigade.
The process of qualifying as a Level 1 Instructor can be split into 3 phases:
Pre-requisites
Before attending a Level 1 Instructor course students need to have completed the following courses:
- Swiftwater Rescue Technician Unit 1 - this course needs to be completed on two occasions. Or a SRT Unit 1 and a WRT
- Swiftwater Rescue Technician Advanced
Students also need to hold a current Emergency Medical Technician certificate or an Advanced First Aid Qualification that covers oxygen administration, airway management and spinal management.
Training course
This is an assessed 5 day course looking at delivery of the programme and has both theoretical and practical elements. There are three possible outcomes at the end of the course.
Provisional Pass – Students can now begin to deliver courses within their own agency and work towards non-provisional status.
Conditional Pass – Students have an identified weak area in their performance which needs to be addressed before they can attain Provisional Instructor status. Conditional Instructors can work on courses alongside Non-Provisional Instructors.
Fail – Students will need to re-sit the course
Post training development
After the training course students need to work on a number of courses to gain further experience. This mentorship phase will be completed when a student has been observed delivering a class by an Instructor Trainer and they will then receive Non-Provisional Instructor status.
It is worth bearing in mind that the above courses are the minimum attendance required to move through the programme. Students need to ensure that they have sufficient training and assimilation opportunities between courses to develop their skills and knowledge. This is a vital stage before attending the Instructor class.
